Vocabulary


Volcano: a very weak spot in the Earth's crust where lava gushes/spills out.
Magma:molten rock from underneath the Earth's crust, not on top(usually confused with lava)
Lava:molten rock on to of Earth's crust, not underneath(usuallly confused with magma)
Ring of Fire: a major volcano belt
Island Arc:a string of islands created by a volcano
Hot Spot:an area where magma deep inside the mantle melts through the Earth's crust

What is a Volcano

  • a weak spot in Earth's crust where lava comes out
    • can cause devastating damage
      • volcanoes sometimes form islands

Location of Volcanoes


  • volcanoes form a kind of belt(where they are located)
    • most volcanoes occur along diverging plate boundaries
      • such as the mid-ocean ridge
      • in places where subduction occurs
